There was some argument among friends this week about the narrative significance of Jack’s appendectomy in the last episode of LOST. Obviously, the appendectomy was not intended to make us worried that Jack would die. In the very same episode, we’re seeing Jack alive and well in the future. My opinion is that the appendectomy was included to develop Jack, Kate, and Juliet’s characters, and their triangle of mistrust. It seems to me like the idea is that Juliet might be up to her old tricks again, using her medical skills to sabotage or double-cross the LOSTies. Jack wanted to stay awake during the operation in order to make sure that Juliet didn’t injure, poison, or otherwise mess with his system. Is Bernard in on the scheme now? He would have good reason to be, namely, staying on the island a la Rose’s suggestions earlier in the episode.
This is just a thought though. I watched the episode twice and definitely think the sabotage thing could be subtext, but it could just as easily not be. Not overwhelmed by the episodes since the break, but not completely disappointed either. Interested to see what they do at the end of the season. My friend, Fipp, says the Oceanic 6 get off in island time whilst they decide to go back in flashforward time. Not a bad prediction. I think it would work.
